Wed 1 Sep 2010: Federated Farmers spit the dummy over emotional wording?
Federated Farmers has refused to sign an accord to clean up the polluted Manawatū River. Tararua Federated Farmers president John Barrow said his members were not happy with statements in the regional leaders' accord which farmers viewed as "emotional and unscientific" on the state of the river.

Tue 24 Aug 2010: eds Media Release: Government moves to fast-track finfish farming of concern
"The cabinet decisions on aquaculture raise serious concerns about pollution of our coastal waters," said EDS Senior Policy Analyst Raewyn Peart. Cabinet has endorsed proposals by Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Phil Heatley, to unilaterally change the Tasman and Waikato regional coastal plans. The plans currently restrict aquaculture to shellfish species and legislation is proposed to remove this restriction.

New Zealand has achieved yet another world record, but unsurprisingly this one wasn't trumpeted like our sport achievements. The shameful news is that New Zealand is now right up there (or down there) with world leaders in biodiversity loss. Massey scientist Mark Seabrook-Davison recently pointed out that New Zealand has a record 2788 threatened species (and another 3000 without enough data to classify but most of these would join the list if the data were available), making us world leaders in biodiversity decline.

This brand new research project is focused on the Manawatū River and its catchment area. The timing of the project has followed public outcry and media attention, a statement issued in Nov 2009 said that tests on 370 rivers worldwide showed that the Manawatū River was, "one of the worst polluted rivers in the Western World”. Scientists and representatives from three (3) neighbouring Iwi whose whānau, Hapū and Marae have close connections and linkage to the Manawatū River met and decided to support a bid to the Foundation for Research , Science and Technology –FRST.

Fri 23 Jul 2010: Consultation on update to Stationary Energy and Industrial Processes (SEIP) and Liquid Fossil Fuel (LFF) regulations
Consultation is open from 20 July to 6 August 2010 on proposed changes to the:
- Climate Change (Stationary Energy and Industrial Processes) Regulations 2009, and
- Climate Change (Liquid Fossil Fuels) Regulations 2008.
