Taiao Raukawa – Environmental Resource Unit drafted a submission opposing the Manawatū District Council consent application for the Feilding Sewage Treatment Plant to continue discharging human effluent and other waste-water for a further 19 years into the Ōroua River.

Final submissions were due on the 14th January 2010.

Summary of the major points in the Taiao Raukawa submission are that:

  •   The Ōroua River is a natural taonga of Ngāti Raukawa;
  •   Taiao Raukawa advocates on behalf of Ngāti Raukawa and that we have traditionally opposed of any type of discharge entering into our fresh water and salt water   systems;
  •   Taiao Raukawa opposes of any further consents that allows human effluent-sewage and storm-water to enter into the Ōroua River;
  •   The Feilding Sewage Treatment Plant has been running off a series of “interim” consent permits since 2001 – why has this been allowed to occur?;
  •   In 2004, the end of the pipeline was destroyed in a flood, and for 6 years waste-water has been flowing in an open drain – why has this been allowed to occur?;
  •   Overall, Taiao Raukawa opposes on cultural and ecological grounds; and
  •   Taiao Raukawa requests that these applications are declined and that an alternative land-based system is implemented which is environmentally sustainable.

Status: Awaiting Pre-Hearing or Hearing arrangements.
