Thu 7 May 2009: Levin Landfill

There has been an on-going concern and protest by tāngata whenua (Mūaupoko and Ngāti Raukawa), and wider public of Levin regarding the toxic Levin dump. Some of the concerns include: the toxic leachate to nearby Hōkio Stream and groundwater; the transportation of toxic waste from other districts to the Levin dump; and the questionable infrastructure in place to prevent adverse long- term environmental damage.

Despite years of public protest and out-cry, Horizon Regional Council have granted Horowhenua District Council a consent for a further 20 years. Under the present regime once consents are granted they are seldom re-litigated. Ngāti Pareraukawa and other community groups are now working with HDC to better “manage” the dump and to find alternatives for 2030.

A pre-hearing meeting is scheduled at Ngātokowaru Marae, 582 Hōkio Beach Rd LEVIN on 27th April 2009 (date to be confirmed). The pre-hearing meeting is to clarify two issues: technical points that have been outlined in reports leading up to this review of consent conditions; and any causes for concern by neighbours and the “Neighbourhood Liason Group”.
