Ngātokowaru Marae are currently restoring sections of the Hōkio stream. They will continue to plant natives along the strip beside the Marae this winter. Visit the Ngātokowaru website to read more about this project and see before and after photo’s by clicking here.

Ngātokowaru also have an organic food oral history project underway, which looks at traditional ways of growing kai-Māori It is a joint project between “Te Waka Kai Ora” (The National Māori Organic Organisation), and Te Atawhai o te Ao (Independent Māori institute for Environment and Health). Interviews will take place with kaumātua who have stories to tell about growing kai according to tikanga Māori. Research duration is between, July 2008 – June 2011.
