Dr Huhana Smith

Ngāti Tukorehe / Te Rūnanga o Raukawa Stakeholder Trustee/ Chairperson for Taiao Raukawa

Dr Huhana Smith  Huhana is an artist, academic and Senior Curator Māori at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. She is an active member on Te Iwi o Ngāti Tukorehe Trust's (TIONTT) environmental committee and lead researcher/director for a collaborative ecosystems services project with Massey University, New Zealand Centre for Environmental Economics and Te Wānanga-o-Raukawa.

She is currently working with key kaitiaki on the ahi kā roa mapping strategy for cultural landscape in the coastal Kūkū region. Since 1996 Huhana has supported the implementation of the Ōhau River 'loop' revitalisation programme for Tahamatā Incorporation (1997-); Te Hākari Dune Wetland (2000-) and Tikorangi Nursery (2005-) projects. These projects encourage the protection of cultural landscape, sustainability and enhancement of a dynamic coast, its waterways and indigenous biodiversity. Since 2006 Huhana and her partner Richard Anderson (Ngā Whenua Rāhui) have developed the Waikokopu stream rehabilitation project. Huhana also sits on the Environmental Legal Aid panel for the Ministry for the Environment, assisting Māori organisations and other parties with funding for Environment Court cases.
